The following is the usual procedure for seeing a psychotherapist or counsellor.

To make contact with CPNL you can either phone or send an email. In either case, the counselling co-ordinator, Dennis McEldowney, will usually be able to contact you the same day. At times, when you phone you may get an answer phone message.

As a network of therapists working in most parts of London, it will be necessary for the counselling co-ordinator to have a brief discussion with you on the phone. He will probably request the following information:

  • The area of London where you work or live.

  • Your telephone number.

  • Your preference in terms of the gender of the therapist, and any other preferences you have — for example seeing an older therapist, or a particular kind of therapy.

  • Whether you know about our fees. The co-ordinator will ensure you are aware of what fee you will be asked to pay before your initial consultation.

  • Where you first heard about CPNL.

  • Your age and occupation.

  • A brief indication of why you contacted us and how you think counselling may help.

  • This will provide us with the information we need to set up an initial consultation with a suitable counsellor or therapist.

We feel we should emphasise the following. There is no obligation on you to continue with the therapist beyond the initial consultation. Having been referred you may not wish to continue with the therapy or feel that the counsellor and yourself are not suited to each other.

Quite often clients do see more than one therapist for the initial consultation. If you would like to talk about this with the counselling co-ordinator, he can advise you and possibly refer you on to another therapist.

All CPNL therapists belong to the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy or The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and adhere to their written Codes of Ethics & Good Practice.
